Coffee Tour: Porter
Nestled in an old train depot just south of the Capitol, Porter is a destination coffee house serving Counter Culture Coffee. Known for their delicious bocadillo sandwiches, it is a cozy spot perfect for early morning coffee or an afternoon sandwich.
Porter came to Madison's coffee scene in November 2016, quickly earning a spot in my favorite coffee houses in the city. Inside there is one large high-top table perfect for coworking and waiting for your drink to be made. Overflow seating creeps into Motorless Motion Bicycles in a non-invasive way.
I enjoy the homemade syrups at Porter in my lattes as a hint of honey always makes coffee just a bit sweeter. Their house drip coffee is slightly bitter, perfect for early morning wake up calls and afternoon pick-me-ups. I have heard great things about the hot toddies that are on the menu in winter. This cafe has perfected the blend of tea, honey, and whiskey to keep you warm on a snowy day.
The bakery comes in from a variety of places around the city. There are cupcakes from To Di For, donuts from Dough Baby, and lemon curd scones from Lazy Jane's. For savory food, I'm a fan of the Fresh Mozzarella Bocadillo sandwich and the Porter Pocket. See the entire menu here.
Porter is part of a trio of restaurants around Madison. Gib's Bar on Willy Street has a great selection of hand crafted cocktails and is known for their ambiance. Drinking in the house-turned-bar feels as though a close friend threw a party in his parent's house while they were out for the weekend. Next door to Gib's is Grampa's Pizzeria. Grampa's is a great spot for delicious pizza in a cozy environment. For the best deal, check out their date night specials on Tuesdays.
